00048 – Book Hangovers

There's a goofy term in the bookish community1,"book hangover", that describes the feeling you get upon finishing a book that was particularly engrossing and now you can't stop thinking about it. The term comes from its similarity in feeling to the usual kind of hangover (i.e., the kind involving alcohol) — a story of overconsumption and the lingering consequences thereof.

I wonder why2 it is we readers (many of us, anyway), even before we've recovered from our book hangovers, want only to dive into another book (or perhaps the same book) and experience that feeling of intoxication all over again. . . . (Hair of the dog, anyone? XD)

Are we all just book lushes??

  1. Or, as I like to think of it, the Readerverse. ^_^ (If I were ever to start a literary convention, methinks that's what I would call it.) ↩

  2. I don't really. Because of course I, a complete and unabashed bookaholic, can see the appeal! XD ↩
